AI Search Optimisation in the UK: The Complete Guide for Small Businesses
The problem. You have a website. You have content. But when someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity to recommend a business like yours, your name does not come up. AI search optimisation is how you fix that.

What is AI search optimisation?
AI search optimisation is the process of making your website, content and online presence visible to the AI models that now answer search queries directly, rather than returning a list of links.
When someone types a question into ChatGPT, the model does not browse your website in real time. It draws on indexed content, third-party mentions, structured data and authority signals it has already processed. If your business is not part of that picture, you are not part of the answer.
SEO
Search Engine Optimisation
Rank in Google’s traditional results. Still the foundation. Nothing else works well without it.
GEO
Generative Engine Optimisation
Get cited by AI models when they generate answers. Builds on SEO. Does not replace it.
AEO
Answer Engine Optimisation
Be the extracted answer inside an AI Overview or a direct AI response.
For a small business, these are not three separate workstreams. SEO is the foundation. GEO is the layer on top. AEO is what happens when you do both well.
Why now
Why UK businesses are losing traffic they used to earn
Google AI Overviews reached the UK in August 2024. AI Mode followed in July 2025. AI-generated answers now appear on roughly 1 in 5 UK searches, and organic click-through rates have fallen since their introduction.
But here is the part most people miss. Brands that are cited inside an AI Overview earn roughly 120% more clicks than uncited brands on the same query. The clicks are not disappearing. They are concentrating around the businesses that get cited.
AI Overviews and AI Mode are not future problems. They are already changing how your customers find businesses like yours. The window to establish your position early is open, but it will not stay open indefinitely.
How it works
The six things that determine whether AI mentions your business
I work across all six of these when I take on an AI search optimisation project. They are not sequential steps. They reinforce each other.
Technical access
AI crawlers need to reach your site. GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended. A misconfigured robots.txt can make your site invisible before any model reads a single word of your content.
Entity clarity
AI models need to know what you are before they will recommend you. Consistent name, address and description across every platform. A clear About page. Organisation schema on your homepage.
Answer-shaped content
Headings written as questions. A 40 to 60 word direct answer sitting immediately below each one, complete enough to stand alone if an AI engine lifts only that section. FAQ schema marked up correctly.
Third-party presence
Your own website is one source. AI models weight multiple independent sources confirming the same information. Reddit, Quora, trade press, directories. This is the corroboration layer that builds trust with a model.
Consistent business details
Name, address, phone and description must be identical everywhere. Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Yell, LinkedIn, your sector’s trade directory. One inconsistency introduces doubt in every AI engine that tries to verify who you are.
Freshness
Pages that get cited by AI models tend to be fresher than pages that do not. A quarterly review of your core pages is enough to maintain the freshness signal that keeps you in the citation pool.
The work
What I actually do, and what you get
Every project starts with understanding where you are now, before anything is built.
AI visibility audit
Testing your business against the prompts your customers are actually typing into ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. Not keyword rankings. Prompt citations.
Technical access review
Checking that AI crawlers can reach your site and that your robots.txt is configured correctly for the crawlers you want and those you do not.
Entity and schema setup
Organisation schema, LocalBusiness schema, FAQPage schema, and a consistent entity definition across every platform where your business exists.
Content restructuring
Rewriting existing pages and creating new content with answer capsules, question-led headings and citation-ready structure.
Third-party presence building
Building a genuine presence on Reddit, Quora, relevant directories and trade press. The platforms AI models pull citations from.
Tracking and reporting
Monitoring your citation presence across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. What is working, what is not, and what to do next.
Who this is for
Who this is for
- Brands not appearing in AI-generated answers despite having good content and decent Google rankings
- Businesses that want visibility across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews
- Founders who want a clear strategy, not a checklist of tactics that may or may not apply to their business
Honest about this
What this does not include, and why I say that
I do not offer guaranteed AI citations. There is no paid placement in ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something that does not exist.
What I offer is a systematic approach to the factors that are known to influence AI citation, applied consistently, measured honestly, and adjusted based on what the data shows.
Results typically begin to appear within 60 to 90 days on Perplexity, which indexes the live web on almost every query. ChatGPT takes longer due to training data lag. I will tell you what realistic progress looks like for your specific situation, not the optimistic version.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
SEO helps you rank in Google’s traditional search results. AI search optimisation helps your content get cited by AI models when they generate answers. In 2026, you need both. SEO is the foundation. AI search optimisation is the layer on top.
Perplexity is typically the fastest, sometimes within weeks, because it crawls the live web on almost every query. ChatGPT takes longer due to training data lag. Most clients see meaningful progress across at least one engine within 60 to 90 days.
No. The technical checks are my job. I explain what I find and what I recommend in plain terms, and I can work directly with your developer if you have one, or handle the implementation myself if you do not.
Especially relevant. When someone asks ChatGPT or Gemini to recommend a local business, the engine pulls from Google Business Profile data, review content, local directories and your website. Getting your local AI presence right is a contained, achievable project for most small businesses.
Yes, some of it. Updating your robots.txt, reviewing your Google Business Profile, writing answer capsules for your five most important pages. My blog covers exactly this. Where clients typically need help is in the audit, the strategic prioritisation and the third-party presence building.
That depends on scope and whether we are working on AI search optimisation specifically or as part of a broader retainer. I publish honest pricing guidance on the blog rather than listing fixed packages here, because the right scope varies significantly between businesses.
